Descripción del proyecto
Located 900 meters above sea level and surrounded by mango trees, which have been there for more than a decade, Casa Caoba is designed to be a getaway for its users and, at the same time, an opportunity to explore different notions of interaction with the living species of the area that weave a network of interdependence in this tropical landscape.
The house stands on a stone base in order to adapt to the slopy topography of the place. Consequently, five aligned walls are extruded to arrange the four domestic modules of the dwelling. In this way, the walls compose framed views of the surrounding Andes landscape and produce a passive cross-ventilation system. Therefore, the project offers microclimates to the users that improve the habitability in a region with temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius.
The house operates by diluting the limits between the built and the natural environment. For that reason, the design minimizes the use of longitudinal walls and places a series of openings along the transversal walls that foster direct visual relations between each space. In addition, the central module of the house intends to be a space for reflection and reconnection with nature. Thus, the south façade is uncovered so that the sun bathes the project throughout the day and, at the same time, welcomes the native plants on the north side.
Inside, the house prioritizes the use of honest and conscious materiality to respond to the region's availability. In this way, bamboo sticks wrap the entire ceiling, making the interior cozy and homey. On the other hand, by incorporating local techniques into the project, pine wood is used for the carpentry and teak for the furniture to contrast the stones and gray ceramics used for the floor.
Casa Caoba navigates alternative ways, not only to place architecture on a steep slope topography but also how to negotiate its existence with the living species of the tropical environment. Therefore, instead of understanding architecture as a relationship of solids and voids, the project proposes to act from its role as a mediator, where each open domestic space is in physical interaction between human and more-than-human actors.
