SITE CHARACTER & ANALYSIS

Although located only 100m awayfrom the Kata Beach, G.M.R. KATA site sits on a hilly landscape, thus,resulting in a steep topography. The site has clusters of mature trees, whichthe landscape team has put an effort to preserve. Natural system will remainundisturbed on the site, while with an attempt to minimize the environmentalimpact during construction.

Visitors will arrive the resortfrom the highest point of the hill, and slowly walk down the slope fordifferent activities. This way, they will enjoy the changing view of thestunning forest and the ocean,  they willhave different experience of the natural scenery as they turn around everycorner.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

G.M.R. KATA is a hotel &resort project with an excellent view to the Kata Beach at Phuket, Thailand.
We take advantage from the exciting topography and seek this opportunity tocreate a unique resort landscape under two main goals—make use of the slope tomaximize privacy for the users; and use landscape treatment to stabilize theslope in order to prevent erosion.

DESIGN CRITERIA & CONCEPT

Given the natural setting of densevegetation and the Kata Beach, the project is thus given the theme of “TheHidden Nature” which describes the potential and harmonious coexistence betweenhuman and nature.

Taking the advantages from thetopographical setting, our landscape design attempted to integrate with theexisting contours. Moreover, large rocks on the hill are preserved andintegrated with our landscape design, such as pool area and pathway, so thatthe overall design outcome becomes more harmonized and natural.

LANDSCAPE DESIGN &PROGRAMMES

G.M.R. KATA is divided into twomain zones—the Lobby Zone and the Club House Zone.

Lobby Zone

When people arrive the Lobby Zone,they will immediately see the feature wall, which the texture and pattern ofthe wall are inspired by the ragged topography.

The Lobby Zone features with theinfinity pools, giving an extraordinary endless view towards the forest, thebeach and ultimately towards the ocean. A variety of functions in the swimmingpools are provided, including lap pool, kids pool, and jacuzzi pool. Flexibleterraces are created next to the pools, accommodating different groups ofusers. When viewing from the plan view, it is easy to discover that we tried tocreate a lot of 3-dimensional niches. These niches can help separate thefunctions of the space and maximize the privacy for users as they are boundedby some specially designed planters. When visitors situate in the landscape,they will enjoy the peaceful atmosphere with the sound of the waterfall and theforest view as a backdrop, which is an authentic experience of the naturalforest.

Club House Zone

With the hilly contour and thedense forest, the Club House Zone is designed with the hidden forest theme.Similar to the previous zone, the landscape is also integrated with theexisting contours. With dense vegetation and the angular layout, the Club HouseZone puts extra emphasis on the forest hide and seek scheme.

By the sides of the main lap pool,niches of Jacuzzi pools are provided. The niche pools not only enhance privacyof the users, but ensuring the best view towards the open landscape in thefront. At the edge of the lap pool will be a waterfall feature, which amplifiesthe natural setting of the landscape design.

A series of step terraces arecreated on the hill, forming various types of rooms for user groups atdifferent sizes. The stepping terraces allow people from all rooms to enjoy abroad forest and beach scenery without being blocked by another room.

CONCLUSION

G.M.R. KATA projectdemonstrates a high quality hospitality landscape design which is harmonizedwith the natural topography. The team has taken the steep topography as anopportunity to open up the view towards the Kata Beach and creating a variationof interesting landscape. Visitors will definitely feel refreshed situating inthe “hidden in nature” themed design of the G.M.R.KATA.
