The space which was commissioned for reconstruction is divided longitudinally by an existing height difference of 0.5m while at the same time its width is gradually decreasing. These already existing facts were integrated into the design, signaling the programmatic division between circulation/preparation and sitting area. A steel piece of furniture designed to play a multi-role as a staircase, a sitting bench and a receptor for an indoor olive tree bridges the height gap between the two spaces. The dynamic triangle shaped form of the steel bench-receptor-stair which hovers above the ground on both its sides offers the solution to the issue of the volatile width. Thus, it intensifies the perspective of the viewer offering the illusion of a shop larger in length, while at the same time it becomes the expressive element-bearer of the main concept, that of the “estia”. The visitors gather around the planted olive tree which in that case serves as the archaic, primordial fiery center of the ancient dwelling and as a reference to the topos of Delphi.

As a result, the steel bench unravels in space as a stair-floor, rises and stretches to become a bench and pot for the tree and tackling successfully spatial, aesthetic and design issues like a silent protagonist. The preservation of the rock masonry as a neutral background and its indirect lighting through hidden led tapes along the wooden shelves that span its length create a sense of length and unity along the store. The showcase and counter benches form an L shape which embraces the visitor on his/her entrance while their cladding with green marble creates a silent color agreement between them and the olive tree. The surgical use of indirect led lighting accentuates the design details and materiality following the geometry of the roof and the structure.
